New Jersey Communities United

Senior Community Organizer

Based in Newark, NJ

Salary Range: $70,000 – $80,000
Reports To: Executive Director

About Us:
New Jersey Communities United (NJCU), in a decade-long partnership with CWA Local 1037, has organized a base of childcare providers, early childhood workers, teachers, and parents across New Jersey. We are fighting for an equitable and affordable childcare system that raises industry standards for the workforce and centers the voices of workers and working-class families in political decision-making. Our leaders and organizing team are dedicated to restructuring the childcare system to be inclusive and equitable for all.

Position Summary:
We are seeking a self-motivated, experienced Senior Community Organizer to build a base of leaders and strengthen our current member leadership. This position reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Field Director and our base of early childhood workers. The ideal candidate will be responsible for conducting training, education, and leadership development with parents, community organizations, and labor unions across New Jersey. The Senior Community Organizer, along with the Field Director, will work with the Executive Director and Communications Director to develop short and long term campaign goals, tactics and strategies.

Key Responsibilities:
Base Building & Leadership Development:

  • Build a broad base of individual contacts with parents and families, with the goal of developing them into active leaders and members of NJ Communities United.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings (both in-person and virtual) with members to deepen their investment in our mission, retain and engage current leadership, and integrate their ideas and concerns into our campaigns.
  • Facilitate and manage leadership committees to drive organizational goals.
  • Implement ongoing leadership development training and political education.

Campaign & Coalition Work:

  • Engage member leaders in city and state-level campaigns and coalitions aligned with our mission.
  • Find, manage, and disseminate accurate campaign information.
  • Build and maintain strong organizing committees.
  • Plan, organize, and facilitate neighborhood and statewide meetings, community events, and actions.
  • Work with Coalition partners to develop long term legislative goals and implement organizing strategies to pressure elected officials

Communication & Strategy:

  • Communicate campaign messages clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Use strategic judgment and problem-solving skills to advance campaign objectives.
  • Work independently within a strategic plan and collaboratively as part of a diverse team.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • A deep commitment to social, economic, and racial justice, the labor movement, and grassroots organizing.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in labor and/or community organizing.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and the ability to motivate and move others to action.
  • A strong work ethic and willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, as projects demand.
  • Strong team player with the ability to thrive in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a large and diverse cross-section of members and allies.
  • A comprehensive understanding of unions and the labor movement.
  • A valid driver's license and access to a personal vehicle for work-related travel (mileage is reimbursed).

Preferred Qualification:

  • Spanish fluency is highly desired.

Benefits & Work-Life Balance:
This position requires a flexible schedule with the ability to work evenings and weekends as needed to meet the demands of our campaigns. In recognition of this irregular and demanding work, NJ Communities United encourages a healthy work-life balance and is deeply committed to supporting the health and well-being of our employees. This is a fundamental principle of our commitment to worker justice, and it is reflected in our comprehensive benefits package:

  • Health & Wellness: Generous health, dental, and optical insurance coverage.
  • Financial Future: Optional 401(k) participation.
  • Time Off: Generous vacation time, sick leave, flex time, and all state and federal holidays off.
