Job Summary: Responsible for supporting the winemaking staff and winemaking activities in the winery and in the lab to ensure wine quality aspects are met. The Enologist investigates and conducts trials that resolve issues and advance wine quality. In addition, the Enologist ensures that routine chemistry is conducted and reviewed in a timely fashion, then interprets results to make an action plan for the cellar.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Performs & Reviews Analysis: (50%)
• Preforms laboratory analyses within the accuracy parameters of the instruments and analysis.
• Trains lab techs and interns on new analyses.
• Assists in evaluation of new analytical methods for introduction to the lab or for instrument purchase.
• Analyzes all red wines with a modified Harbertson-Adams assay.
• Regularly reviews lab analyses of Inglenook wine inventory for anomalies or missing information. Works with Production Supervisor to schedule follow up analysis or broad-based analysis on barrel lots.
• Creates and executes work plan with a direction from winemaking.
• Ensures that bottling blend analysis matches bottled wine analysis. Captures details of bottling blends for reference on future blends or future vintages.
• Enters all lab data into InnoVint.
2. Winemaking Support: (10%)
• Tastes wine inventory with Winemaking staff to build familiarity with wine style and wine quality issues.
• Acts as a technical resource regarding treatments that would reduce wine quality issues or advance wine style.
• Prepares blends or trials as agreed upon with Winemaking staff including tasting and cellar implementation of results.
3. Special projects and harvest support: (15%)
• Conducts special technical projects as needed in the winery to resolve quality assurance or wine quality issues.
• Supports Winemaking staff at harvest time by assisting with tank additions, fermentation management, fining trials and special analyses.
• Uses InnoVint to check history of wine movements and analyses and is proficient in analysis data entry and correction.
• Participates in continuing education programs when available, or technical forums, which enhance job performance and technical contribution to the winery.
• Prepares clear work outlines for the Production Supervisor to use to implement desired wine work.
• Assist in management of harvest winemaking intern.
4. Cellar duties: (25%)
• Sterilizes tanks, hoses, and pumps.
• Operates pumps, hoses, barrel steamer and barrel washer, ozone machine.
• Operates wine presses.
• Inspects partial tanks, gases headspace.
• Makes SO2 additions to wine in barrel or tank.
• Observes all safety Procedures: Confined space, tank entry, harness safety, respiratory, slip and fall.
• Measures wine additives and sanitizing supplies.
• Cleans floors with pressure washer.
• Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Job Requirements:
Education/Experience:
Minimum of 2-5 years related experience, preferably in a winery.
BS degree in Enology, Fermentation Science or equivalent preferred.
