Location | Nashville, TN (Hybrid)

The Tennessee-Western Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church is seeking a dedicated and mission-minded Controller to join our leadership team. This vital role ensures the financial health, transparency, and accountability of the Conference, serving both as a financial steward and as a partner in ministry with clergy, laity, and churches.

As Controller, you will play a key role in guiding the Conference’s financial operations, implementing best practices, and providing critical insights that support strategic decision-making. You will oversee accounting, budgeting, audits, reporting, internal controls, and compliance, all while ensuring alignment with GAAP standards and United Methodist practices.

🔑 Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of financial reporting, analysis, and recordkeeping.
  • Manage budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow to ensure fiscal responsibility.
  • Oversee annual audits and maintain strong internal controls.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit regulations, and United Methodist standards.
  • Supervise accounts payable/receivable, reconciliations, payroll tax reporting, and fixed asset management.
  • Collaborate with committees, clergy, and staff to provide financial guidance and support.
  • Serve as a trusted partner to the Conference Treasurer and administrative team.

📌 Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 8 years of finance/accounting experience (nonprofit experience strongly preferred); audit experience required.
  • Skills:
  • Deep knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting practices.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and reporting skills.
  • High level of integrity and ability to handle confidential information.
  • Proficiency with accounting software (Shelby Systems experience a plus), Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to support both professional and ministry contexts.
  • Familiarity with United Methodist structure is preferred.

🌍 Work Environment

  • This is a hybrid position based out of our Nashville, TN office, requiring in-office attendance on specified days.
  • Candidates must live within a commutable distance of Nashville, TN, to fulfill the hybrid work schedule.
  • Some overnight travel is required.
  • Collaborative, mission-driven team environment.
  • Salary Range: $100,000 to $120,000
  • Eligible for medical/dental/vision benefits, a 403(b) retirement savings plan, and paid time off.
